      <image:title>Oregon 14 - Multnomah Falls Full</image:title>
      <image:caption>It was getting into the evening when my co-worker and I made it to Multnomah Falls. I shot a few balancing and composition shots while waiting for the bridge to get as clear as possible, which took the better part of half an hour, but this is the shot that came from it. The mist coming off the falls required me to constantly clear my lens; some small drops are still visible in the upper part of the photo. All in all a very nice place. The bridge was accessible via a short walk, but the views from it were not terribly breathtaking. The mini-rockslide was exciting though, Alec and I stayed against the up-hill wall of the path for the rest of the climb...</image:caption>

      <image:caption>The view from the top of the falls. The walk up was killer, 1.25 miles of nothing but nearly 30 degree steep switchbacks. <image:title>Tech Stubs - Projection of Impressionism</image:title>
      <image:caption>These were originally born of a mistake on my part. I was shooting a 35mm film cinema projector, and I decided to reframe my shot by cranking the zoom. I was unaware at the time that I had left the shutter open, something resembling this popped out. I initially wrote it off as a lost frame, but when I developed the roll, I decided to do an entire extra shoot based on this "technique." The choppiness of the lines in the image is due to the projector's interrupter breaking the light up in order to not illuminate the film during frame changes.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>The Spot strobe that we also use for ballistics was used here to stop the advancing fracture propagation front of a shattering Prince Rupert's Drop. The fracture front was measured to propagate at nearly 1,500 FPS. The fractured glass appears white because it hasn't had much chance to spread out, and so it reflects back the flash from all the cracks instead of passing the flash through it like the intact part of the drop. <image:title>Waterworks - Drop Collision I</image:title>
      <image:caption>This image was produced by colliding a Worthington Jet (the spout of water that forms when a drop of water falls into a reservoir of water) with a second drop of water. When done in a manner that is correct in my opinion (your mileage may vary) the result is the formation of a thin sheet/disk of water over the top of the jet. If the jet is still moving briskly upwards when the second drop hits it, the result looks like image two in this title series. When the jet it moving upwards at about the same rate as the drop is falling, a flatter, leveler disk results. When the jet has even less energy, the disk looks like this. This image was lit from above, and from two sides by synchronized flashes. Image produced in collaboration with James Bales.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Similar to the last photo, these photos were also produced by colliding a Worthington Jet with a falling drop of water, however, in this case the reservoir of water was a clear dish sitting on top of a colored sheet of acrylic, in turn on top of the strobe. Bottom lighting the water allows for a clean black background, with high contrast on the ripples of the surface of the water, which lens out the light. <image:title>Waterworks - A New Neon Milkdrop I</image:title>
      <image:caption>Styled after "Milk Drop Coronet" by Harold Edgerton in 1936, in this photo a droplet of water falls onto a thin film of water, creating the characteristic "crown" splash. The film of water for these shots was situated on top of a sheet of colored acrylic, which in turn, was sitting atop an upwards facing strobe. The strobe was strategically positioned in order to allow the reflection of the coronet to fall on an unlit section of acrylic, making the photo more symmetrical. I think the blue and aqua shots came out the best of the set. Photo produced with Theresa Mislick, Victoria Gunning, Edward Moriarty.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>A relatively flat disk. For these images, the drops were backlit by an assembly of four colored acrylic sheets and a strobe. I exploited the water's lensing in order to gain color contrast from the ripples and bulges. The central column of drops is the most illustrative bit of the image to that point. <image:caption>This is actually an Indium Gallium eutectic alloy (Galinstan) being used in place of water. It turned out not to be very exciting, as the high surface tension means that the Galinstan Worthington jet is hard-pressed to break up into a droplet at the top. The just just sort of goes up, and then falls over on its side. Image produced in collaboration with Matthew Rece.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>The grass was so incredibly golden. It was like living through a sepia filter. I snapped 40 or so shots, and this one was the closest I came to rendering the grass correctly. The views weren't spectacular, but satellite analysis says that I probably should have gone farther up river. Also, more neutral density filters next time, because I was using my N.D. 400, ISO 60, f/22, and still having exposure times around 1/10s, which really isn't enough for the type of water smoothness I prefer.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>A near infrared panorama. Shot using a cheapo Zomei filter tuned for 910nm light, and a D810. Not half bad for $15, so I bought a 750nm filter, to be reported on in future uploads. This filter does eat light though; the constituent images were shot at ISO 2,000 f/2.8 30s.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Schlieren - Pop! III</image:title>
      <image:caption>For this shot, the background colors have been backed off a bit. Letting the background color bleed in a bit is a good way to increase contrast near the edge of the color, but shooting without it allows for a black background, which looks nicer IMO.Additionally, the casing of the party popper has been fully stripped away, and some glow from the explosion can be seen in the middle of the image. A final not: if you look closely at my Leatherman, you can see a small shockwave reflection where the main bubble hits it. <image:title>Idaho 14 - Bruneau Dunes I</image:title>
      <image:caption>So we get to the Dunes at around 10 or 11 PM. It's still light out, temperature is nice, but the lighting isn't great. I shoot around a bit, strap up, and decide I want to make my way to the top of the dunes. The mosquitoes. are. everywhere. The pond at the bottom of the Dunes is essentially one big stagnant mosquito hatchery; it's the worst swarm of mosquitoes I've ever seen. I try running the trail to the top, but I just can't, way too many mosquitoes. Ctd. 30s exposure, lit by moonlight, ~1 AM. 18mm (27mm) f/3.5</image:caption>

      <image:title>Idaho 14 - Bruneau Dunes II</image:title>
      <image:caption>So we retreat to the car, and spend the better part of half an hour murdering the dozens of insects that flew in when we opened the doors. Some of their corpses are probably still in that car to this day. We wait a while, until about 1 AM turning the AC on and off intermittently, ever wary for the sound of a missed bug. I head out with my kit, and frame up some shots. The mosquitoes are still horrible, but now they're a tad fewer than before. My technique for these shots was something like this:</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5519f1afe4b0caf5831f2336/1430184953718-ET9EUZEI80KCMSOBZT59/_DSC5499.JPG</image:loc>
      <image:title>Idaho 14 - Bruneau Dunes III</image:title>
      <image:caption>Step 1: Plant tripod, frame shot, meter, focus, push shutter. Step 2: Run in a large circle approximately 30s in circumference. Step 3: Realize that was only 20s, and the shutter is still open. Run another loop. Step 4: Check histogram, refocus, re-trip shutter, run in another, bigger, circle. Step 5: Repeat step 4 if necessary, else grab tripod while running and move to next spot. That thing in the top right is the moon! and the left side of the sky is the milky way! Way more stars than in NYC!</image:caption>

      <image:caption>After all the shooting was done, we all piled back into the car, and managed to make it to the only Dominoes for an hundred miles fifteen minutes before closing. They still made us some pizzas, because we were starving, and they were pretty bro-tier. I'm going to go back to Bruneau some day. I'm going to go back there and climb those dunes. Also re-shoot with my new D810. This trip was my D7000's last hurrah, and it performed admirably.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Idaho 14 - Campfire II</image:title>
      <image:caption>Okay, I'm not going to lie, these shots were sort of inspired by that silly "it's in my hands again" campaign for the trainwreck of a camera that was the Nikon DF. Ugh. Anyway, it was a wonderful, if drizzly night for camping near Redfish Lake. On a little jaunt to the lake, I found some small Labradorite like inclusions in the local rock, miniscule really, but enough to send back a few blue reflections from my flashlight. Also, a camouflaged fish. Also, too poor conditions to get any significantly good pictures. On the bright side, at the Sunny Gulch campground near Salmon River I found a small sample of opal, which was freaking awesome, because I had really wanted to go opal hunting that trip, but couldn't.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Idaho 14 - River Rocks II</image:title>
      <image:caption>I think this is my favorite photo of the trip. Some of the Bruneau dunes are also up there, but the sheer texture of the rock, and the absolute cooperation the lighting gave me really put this on the top of my stack. The water fogged just right, the rocks sat nice and still, the highlights didn't saturate, and all was right in the world. I took this picture at the start of the hike, and then again a few hours later, after thinking it over a bit, and the second set pictures were almost exactly the same as the first set.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>I came across this guy trying to make its way back to the water on one of my walks. It was attempting (and succeeding, to an extent) to roll its way back to the water, which really blows my mind, because I didn't think these things were capable of understanding not water let alone understanding where water is, and how to get itself there. I chucked it about 20 feet off shore in a lot less time than it would have taken to get there by itself.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Lichtenberg - It Starts From Here</image:title>
      <image:caption>This image depicts the first ten seconds of tendril formation of a Lichtenberg Figure on a poplar board. To generate these figures, the board is prepared and hooked up to a microwave oven transformer. These images were produced via long exposure with the aid of a neutral density filter and several fans angled to remove the smoke produced by the process from view. Photo produced with Ben D. Riggs, Victoria Gunning.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>I would have to say this one is my favorite from the shoot, but feel free to disagree. 30 second exposure, standing on top of a table in a smoke filled room over a piece of wood hooked up to a microwave oven transformer. Though, come to think of it, the most dangerous thing in the room was probably the order of Doritos deep fried cheese triangle things. They were delicious though. Photo produced with Ben D.
